Six Flags New Orleans, formerly known as Jazzland, opened its thrills and chills in 2000. A water park was in the planning stages, but ironically it was water that flooded and seriously damaged the park during Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Since that time, the abandoned amusement park has remained closed. The Mega Zeph wooden roller coaster is under water in parts, Rex’s Rail Runner is rusted and overgrown with plants, and the laughter and screams of delighted thrill seekers have faded away.

Infested with insects and wildlife, the park was nevertheless used in scenes in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) and Jurassic World (2015). But movie companies may soon have to look elsewhere for spooky, creepy deserted amusement park locations.

Due to complaints from neighbors, the abandoned park may not have much longer to live before it is demolished. On March 16, 2021, a City of New Orleans selection committee shortlisted three real estate development finalists to vie for the ability to redevelop the former Six Flags/Jazzland site. Further details will be available in the comings weeks.
